Art History Assignment: Enos Praying

This piece was for an Art History assignment. We had to create an original work in the manner of an artist we had studied that semester. I chose to make a piece after "Bodhidarma Meditating" by the Japanese Zen master Hakuin Ekaku. My piece depicts the Book of Mormon prophet Enos praying. In place of Hakuin's calligraphic writing, I've painted an excert from Enos' book. The complete passage is, "And I rejoice in the day when my mortal shall put on immortality, and shall stand before him [the Lord]; then shall I see his face with pleasure, and he will say unto me: Come unto me, ye blessed, there is a place prepared for you in the mansions of my Father. Amen."

The paper is a sheet of tracing paper folded on itself, to resemble the paper Hakuin painted on. I diluted black gouache paint to the consistency of India ink. I got an A for this project and the paper that I wrote to go with it.
